A twenty-five old woman had incapacitating hypochondriasis (disease phobia and
conviction of being infected) for four years and agoraphobia with panic attacks
for two years. Hypochondriasis was treated by a combination of methods which
previously had appeared to be effective. Fear of driving, which was the most
disabling of the agoraphobic symptoms, was treated by desensitization in
imagery, aided by relaxation training using EMG and skin temperature
biofeedback, followed by exposure in vivo. Self-ratings and ratings were used to
monitor the progress of treatment. She improved rapidly, had completely
recovered after six months, and on a 14-month follow-up, had remained free of
these symptoms.
