Intersectionality as a radical framework for transforming our disciplines, social issues, and the world

Abstract: In this introduction to the special issue on Applications of Intersectionality to Critical Social Issues, we assert that a psychological study of social issues that seeks to move toward social justice, equity, and liberation must embrace intersectionality's radical core. This requires constant critical inquiry and praxis centered on power, including how we shape power and how power shapes us. The both/and logics of intersectionality are particularly essential, as we can exist in both oppressive and liberatory … Show more

“…Although Crenshaw (1989) and Collins (1986) served as visible forerunners in the intersectionality movement, pundits of intersectionality should consider the works of several women of color and queer women of color who were instrumental in foregrounding intersectionality's theoretical foundations (e.g., Anzaldúa, 1987;Combahee River Collective, 1977/1995Davis, 1983;hooks, 1984;Lorde, 1984;Moraga & Anzaldúa, 1983). As power has become a central crux for intersectionality (Bowleg & Bauer, 2016;Overstreet et al, 2020), this component highlights the policies, conditions, and environments that create access and equity for multiple marginalized communities. Power also augments other core tenets of intersectionality.…”

“…Further, conceptual and methodological shifts are currently being observed in the involvement of the participant as co-creator of the research. Overstreet et al (2020) suggest that research informed by intersectionality demands participant involvement in the development of the research question and methods, while also requiring the researcher to reflect on how systems of power may bias the assumptions and practice of psychological research. An intersectional perspective necessitates that psychological knowledge, theory, and research must be oriented toward social justice actions and goals, making social activism a central consequence of advancing psychological knowledge ( Settles et al, 2020 ).…”

“…Intersectionality theory emphasizes that (a) individuals occupy distinct positions of systematic advantage and disadvantage as a function of their unique constellation of identities (e.g., Purdie-Vaughns & Eibach, 2008), (b) systems of oppression are multiplicative and interlocking-producing experiences not captured by sexism or racism alone (e.g., Bowleg, 2008), (c) social change necessitates knowledge of intersectionality and accompanying power dynamics (e.g., Overstreet et al, 2020), and (d) the act of applying an intersectional lens in research and practice must not be depoliticized (e.g., Buchanan & Wiklund, 2021). By applying intersectional perspectives, researchers will better address the transformative potential of cues.…”
