Interregional inventor networks as studied by patent coinventorships

Abstract: We study the structure of the interregional inventor networks in Sweden by examining the residence of inventors and coinventors involved in Swedish patent applications to the European Patent O¢ ce. Several factors are found to in ‡uence the spatial a¢ nity of regions. We …nd that spatial a¢ nity extends beyond the region if it has less own R&D-related resources (business R&D, university R&D and patenting); if it is close to the other region and if it is relatively small. The resources of that other region play… Show more

“…I specify the geography of biotechnology co-patenting by attributing each co-patent to the locations where the inventors reside. A co-patent with multiple inventors living in different cities is fractionally allocated, which is consistent with Maggioni et al [7], Ó hUallacháin and Lee [24], Lee [25], Ejermo and Karlsson [97]. If a co-patent was invented by three inventors residing in different cities, one-third of the co-patent is allotted to each city.…”

“…In consequence, the best-positioned actors in the network rapidly gain reputation because they are frequently cited, which contributes to their aura (Giuliani, 2013). Whenever identification of these leaders is easily obtained via observation or local broadcasting, the actors reduce their search costs and uncertainty by addressing them directly when establishing new collaborations (Ejermo and Karlsson, 2006). As a result, highly reputed actors may be considered more valuable and therefore more popular exchange partners (Ebbers and Wijnberg, 2010) because these relationships provide valuable resources and generate spillover effects by improving the status of the weaker companies (Podolny, 1993).…”

“…Co-publications among regions have been analysed by Katz (1994) for the UK regions, Danell and Persson (2003) for Swedish regions, Liang and Zhu (2002) for Chinese regions, and Ponds et al (2007) for Dutch regions. Co-inventorships among Swedish regions using patent data have been analysed by Ejermo and Karlsson (2006). At the European level, we know of only one patent study by Maggioni and Uberti (2007) who analysed the effect of geographical distance on inter-regional collaborations based on co-inventorships between NUTS2 regions for six countries.…”
