Interpretations of Indentation Size Effects

Abstract: Interpretations of Indentation Size EffectsFor very shallow indentations in W, Al, Au, and Fe-3wt%Si single crystals, hardness decreased with increasing depth irrespective of increasing or decreasing strain gradients. As such, strain gradient theory appears insufficient to explain the indentation size effect (ISE) at depths less than several hundred nanometers. Present research links the ISE to a ratio between the energy of newly created surface and plastic strain energy dissipation. Also, the contact surface … Show more

“…But the fit over a wider range of indentation depths is not as good; see, for example, Poole et al (1996), Gerberich et al (2002) and Swadener et al (2002). This is consistent with the conical indentation simulations of Begley and Hutchinson (1998) using the Fleck and Hutchinson (1997) strain gradient plasticity theory which do not predict the Nix and Gao (1998)-type scaling over the full range of indentation depths.…”

“…( 1 1 1 Gerberich et al [29] have studied the nanoindentation size effect arising from the indentation depth dependence of surface and volume work. They attributed the plastic work to the motion of a number of dislocations, which also fundamentally differs from the dislocation-starved regime considered here.…”
