Interpolymer complex formation of some nonionogenic polymers with linear and crosslinked polyacrylic acid

Abstract: SYNOPSISThe formation of interpolymer complexes on the surface of crosslinked poly (acrylic acid) with some nonionogenic polymers is compared with the complex formation in analogous linear polymer systems. The behavior of these systems is compared with that of complexes of two oppositely charged polyelectrolytes. The concentration redistribution of the linear polymer in the system polyelectrolyte network-polymer solution and the degree of swelling of this network in these solutions were determined. 0 1994 John… Show more

“…It was supposed that the gel reswelling is a result of the destruction of the 1a -2 complex as it was shown for the interpolymer complex of the linear polymer 16) . The charge properties of the gel surface layer seem to play an important role in the explanation of the data obtained 19) . It is seen that the destruction process can conditionally be divided into three regions.…”

“…When carboxylate anions begin to leave the surface layer the charge density of it will be smaller. The decrease of the charge density is known to favour gel contraction 19) . In the third region at pH A 6,6 the destruction of the complex is completed and the gel takes its dimension.…”

“…The authors62 reported the concentration redistribution of HEC in the system hydrogel PAA–linear HEC. The additional swelling of PAA hydrogels in HEC solutions was observed and explained from the viewpoint of the double electric layer state in the hydrogel‐solution boundary.…”

“…Poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and poly(methacrylic acid) (P MAA) are widely used as polyelectrolytes. Many investigations have been performed on their complexation with other natural and synthetic polymers such as PV A, 11 poly(vinylbenzyltrimethylammonium chloride) ( P VB M A), 12 poly(acrylamide) (PAAm), 13 -15 poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), 16 -18 poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) 19 · 20 and chitosan. 21 Moreover, PAA was also used to separate proteins by precipitation of complexes of PAA and proteins.…”
