Abstract: The Internet of Things (IoT) is a computing paradigm whereby everyday life objects are augmented with computational and wireless communication capabilities, typically through the incorporation of resource-constrained devices including sensors and actuators, which enable their connection to the Internet. The IoT is seen as the key ingredient for the development of smart environments. Nevertheless, the current IoT ecosystem offers many alternative communication solutions with diverse performance characteristics.… Show more

“…Among most relevant AmI areas are the ones described in this paper: semantic web and agents, ambient assisted living, electronic and mobile healthcare, taking care for elderly, medical applications, elearning, smart home and smart cities. The last two fields are related to IoT papers in this anniversary issue [20,33], while medical issues in this paper are complementing the e-medicine related anniversary paper [55].…”

“…Information from sensors, which is often considered high-level, cannot be, evidently, obtained by a direct observation of their raw data. It must be processed by suitable algorithms usually based on machine learning, signal processing and data analysis [3].…”

“…Such services consist of common automated mechanisms and functions that give the ability to monitor and control home appliances, windows, air conditioning system, doors and so forth. However, there are a wide variety of services that classify smart homes differently and that provide different kinds of support and assistance to the users in their daily life activities and actions [3]. Assistive services, which are specifically tailored to the special needs of the user, are part of an assisted living environment.…”

“…Many researchers used microphones as an input to complete interactions at smart homes and have added many available solutions for sending speech commands to control smart home devices [3,4]. There are some challenges in developing a speech recognition system that must be addressed involving distance, security, and noise [5]. This paper presents a proposed speech recognition system to control appliances at smart homes or smart hospitals.…”
