International cross-validation of a BOD5 surrogate

Abstract: BOD5 dates back to 1912 when the Royal Commission decided to use the mean residence time of water in the rivers of England, 5 days, as a standard to measure the biochemical oxygen demand. Initially designed to protect the quality of river waters from extensive sewage discharge, the use of BOD5 has been quickly extended to waste water treatment plants (WWTPs) to monitor their efficiency on a daily basis. The measurement has been automatized but remains a tedious, time- and resource-consuming analysis. We have c… Show more

“…The surrogate method presents obvious operational and economic advantages compared to the standard one but its accuracy has to be strictly evaluated. In 2014, a first publication about the statistical comparison of Enverdi-BOD and standard methods based on 109 samples was published (2). This paper presents a similar approach on an extended number of samples, 261 instead of 109, analyzed by 4 laboratories instead of 2.…”

“…For about 98% of the analysed samples, the Enverdi® DBO result felt in the uncertainty range of the standard methods. This conclusion is consistent with the previous studies carried out with lower sample populations [35,36]. In addition, this equivalence demonstration is based on analysis performed over long time periods (from several months to 1 year), in different locations in France and USA, with sample BOD5 values ranging from 3 to 500 mg O2.L -1 .…”

“…In 2014, a first work was published regarding the BOD result equivalence between the Enverdi® kit and the main BOD5 standard methods (EN 1899-1 and 5210-B) [35]. Around a hundred of municipal wastewater samples were collected and analysed by the SIAAP (Greater Paris, France) and the MMSD (Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District, USA).…”

“…TS were analyzed according the American Public and Health Association Standard methods (APHA et al 1998). BOD 5 was assessed by measurement of microbial catabolic activity using a fluorescent redox indicator in 96well microplates (Envolure, France) (Muller et al 2014). TOC measurements were made using high temperature catalytic oxidation techniques (EN 1484(EN :1997.…”
