Internal Support of Tissue-Engineered Cartilage
Abstract: This pilot technique combining tissue-engineered autologous elastic cartilage with a permanent biocompatible endoskeleton demonstrated success in limiting the inflammatory response to the scaffold, especially to high-density polyethylene, acrylic, and extrapurified Silastic. This model facilitates the potential to generate tissue of intricate shape, such as the human ear, by internal support. Arch Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg. 2000;126:1448-1452

“…The possible inflammation reaction against HDP by the immune system was protected by the chondrocytes-hydrogel mixture covering the HDP. Our results were parallel with Arevalo-silva et al that chondrocytes suspended in the pluronic F127 managed to delay and hinder the inflammation reaction against several types of non-degradable materials [20]. The layer of chondrocytes-hydrogel mixture that covered the HDP later developed into cartilage tissue, which was demonstrated in the histological analysis.…”

“…Elastin has been demonstrated in neocartilage engineered from freshly isolated P0 auricular chondrocytes in swine and canine models. 6,[38][39][40] To date, we know of no studies describing elastin formation in neocartilage engineered from extensively expanded chondrocytes in immunocompetent animals.…”

“…Using this strategy, it became possible to cover prostheses and templates with chondrocytes and bone-forming cells. [20][21][22] Weinand et al 1 investigated if hydrogels could facilitate the colonization potential and new bone formation of BMSCs on a preformed porous b-tricalcium phosphate scaffold in vitro. Although the tested hydrogels resulted in a uniform cell distribution in the scaffold, bone formation was only observed in collagen I and fibrin glue protocols.…”
