Intergroup positioning in peace negotiations: The Bangsamoro peace talks in the Philippines.

Abstract: A major challenge for research and practicing psychologists is to better understand and help solve intergroup conflicts, including in non-Western societies. This study uses quantitative and qualitative methods to explore intergroup dynamics between the government of the Philippines and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, as they attempt to reach a peace pact. The utterances of both parties, as found in the media, were text mined, then analyzed qualitatively through the application of Positioning Theory. Mathema… Show more

“…Cleaning the data entailed separating utterances into individual word tokens, converting words into their root form, lowercase transformation, removal of common and specified stopwords, removing tokens that are too short and too long, and the detection of two-word n-grams , which in this case are tokens made of two words that have been detected to appear next to each other. These RapidMiner processes resulted in the creation of what is called a bag of words (Baquiano, 2019; Montiel et al, 2014). A bag of words can be understood here as a collection of labeled documents, with its contents converted into word tokens and n-grams, that RapidMiner uses in its text mining procedures.…”

“…For our study, the goal of building and validating a model is to assist our objective of observing to what extent the documents can be distinguishable from each other as belonging to the prelabeled categories which we placed during the data preparation process. Given this goal, the entire procedure is intuitively equivalent to discriminant analysis (Baquiano, 2019; Montiel et al, 2014).…”

“…It is devised to help two conflicting parties reach an official settlement (Gawerc, 2006) or negotiated agreement (Jeong, 2002). The peace talks between the government of the Philippines and the Moro rebel group, Moro Islamic Liberation Front (Baquiano, 2019), illustrate this. Tan-Ilagan (2017) reports that armed encounters between these two conflicting groups have significantly lessened as their peace negotiation nears its end.…”
