Ruang terbuka publik di Kawasan RW 05 Kelurahan Sawojajar Kota Malang telah lama tidak dikelola dengan maksimal. Padahal keberadaan ruang publik di kawasan permukiman saat ini tidak hanya menjadi keharusan, trend, bahkan sudah menjadi agenda global seperti yang digaungkan UN-Habitat sebagai Public Space for All. Mengacu pada penelitian dan abdimas kami sebelumnya, teridentifikasi area terbuka publik di Kawasan RW 05 Kelurahan Sawojajar adalah seluas 1550 m2 yang kemudian terbagi menjadi beberapa segmentasi. Salah satu segmentasi merupakan area hijau seluas 700 m2. Harapannya area kosong ini digunakan menjadi taman terbuka baru yang sesuai demografi dan karakter warga yang didominasi oleh usia pensiunan/ manula dan anak-anak. Harapannya kehadiran taman nantinya dapat memberikan manfaat yang optimal dan berkelanjutan terutama dalam konteks sosial dan kesehatan lintas generasi tersebut. Metode yang digunakan dalam pengabdian ini merupakan pendampingan dan pertisipasi yang mengacu pada pendekatan design thinking melalui rembug warga. Hasil dari kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah desain taman manula dan anak di RW 05 Kelurahan Sawojajar, Kota Malang yang dapat diimplementasikan.

Kotagede is a traditional residential area designated as a cultural heritage area. The community is currently developing as a dense residential area and this is limiting the existence of public open spaces despite their importance to social interaction public activities. Therefore, this study was conducted to discuss the quality of public open spaces in Kotagede with a focus on the use and users, accessibility, amenities and furniture, comfort and safety, as well as environmental components through a qualitative method.The findings show that the highest indicator of use and users' aspect was found in location 1 out of the five locations analyzed, comfort and safety was in location 5, accessibility and amenities were also in location 1, and the environmental component was in location 2. Moreover, the variety of users, activities, and activity times discovered for the use and users' indicator showed that the social activities of Kotagede Settlement were driven by the ease of accessibility and amenities in location 1.

This article investigates the potential for intergenerational public space in the Westlake neighborhood of Los Angeles. Through a series of site observations, focus groups, interviews, thick mapping, and participatory design exercises, we work with 43 youth and 38 older adults (over 65), all residents of Westlake, to examine their public space use, experiences, and desires, and identify where the two groups’ interests intersect or diverge. We explore the potential for complementary approaches to creating intergenerational public space using the principles of Universal Design. In doing so, we emphasize the importance of taking an intersectional approach to designing public space that considers the multiple, often overlapping identities of residents of historically marginalized communities predicated by disability and age, in addition to race, class, and gender. Our findings yield insights for creating more inclusive and accessible public spaces in disinvested urban neighborhoods as well as opportunities for allyship between groups whose public space interests have been marginalized by mainstream design standards.
