The capability of smarter networked devices to dynamically select appropriate radio connectivity options is especially important in the emerging millimeter-wave (mmWave) systems to mitigate abrupt link blockage in complex environments. To enrich the levels of diversity, mobile mmWave relays can be employed for improved connection reliability. These are considered by 3GPP for on-demand densification on top of the static mmWave infrastructure. However, performance dynamics of mobile mmWave relaying is not nearly well explored, especially in realistic conditions, such as urban vehicular scenarios. In this paper, we develop a mathematical framework for the performance evaluation of mmWave vehicular relaying in a typical street deployment. We analyze and compare alternative connectivity strategies by quantifying the performance gains made available to smart devices in the presence of mmWave relays. We identify situations where the use of mmWave vehicular relaying is particularly beneficial. Our methodology and results can support further standardization and deployment of mmWave relaying in more intelligent 5G+ "all-mmWave" cellular networks.

Abstract-Communications systems operating in the millimeter-wave (mmWave) and terahertz band have been recently suggested to enable high data-rate vehicle-tovehicle communications in 5G and beyond wireless networks. However, massive deployment of such systems may lead to significant interference, affecting the performance of information transmission. While the multipath interference caused by the signal reflections from the road has been extensively discussed in literature, the interference caused by the vehicles on the side lanes has been insufficiently studied so far. In this paper, using a combination of measurement, simulation, and analytical methods we comprehensively characterize the interference from the side lanes in two typical deployments including highway and urban road environments for millimeter-wave and low terahertz bands. Both the multipath interference and direct interference from the transmitting vehicles on the side lanes is taken into account. As a result of our study, we reveal that: i) the interference from the side lanes can be well approximated using two-dimensional stochastic models without any significant loss of accuracy; and ii) even when highly directional antennas are used there are special spatial configurations, where the interference may greatly affect the performance of the communication systems. We lately apply the developed models to estimate the signal-to-interference ratio and link capacity of mmWave/THz band V2V communications.

As different generations of mobile communication systems are installed in the same area, a mobile terminal (MT) can utilize the multisystem diversity (MSD) by accessing the system providing the highest signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (SINR). However, it is difficult to practically calculate the capacity gain obtained from the MSD environment by using conventional capacity analysis methodologies because each mobile communication system operates in different frequency and channel environments. In this paper, we propose a Poisson-point process (PPP)-based hybrid approach in order to analyze the MSD capacity gain. In the hybrid approach, the SINR interval probability is first derived considering the MSD order. Since SINR intervals are mapped to CQI-MCS table values used in real-world cellular systems, we can calculate a substantially valid system capacity in the MSD environment. In our result, the reliability of the proposed analysis tool is verified by confirming that the existing capacity analysis results can be benchmarked. Based on the reliability, the MSD capacity gain is quantitatively analyzed when heterogeneous cellular systems coexist and interact. Assuming 5G base stations (BS) installed in different locations from the 4G system, an MT can receive signals with different signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (SINR) values from the 4G and 5G systems. If 5G BSs are operating in different subbands, an MT might also experience different SINR values at each subband. In such a wireless communication environment, an MT can newly pursue multisystem diversity (MSD) where the MT can select the best system or subband which provides the maximum SINR.In the MSD environment, the statistical characteristics of the received SINR must be different from the conventional wireless communication environment.
