Water eutrophication has emerged as a pressing concern for massive algal blooms, and these harmful blooms can potentially generate harmful toxins, which can detrimentally impact the aquatic environment and human health. Consequently, it is imperative to identify a safe and efficient approach to combat algal blooms to safeguard the ecological safety of water. This study aimed to investigate the procedure for extracting total flavonoids from Z. bungeanum residue and assess its antioxidant properties. The most favorable parameters for extracting total flavonoids from Z. bungeanum residue were a liquid–solid ratio (LSR) of 20 mL/g, a solvent concentration of 60%, an extraction period of 55 min, and an ultrasonic temperature of 80 °C. Meanwhile, the photosynthetic inhibitory mechanism of Z. bungeanum residue extracts against M. aeruginosa was assessed with a particular focus on the concentration-dependent toxicity effect. Z. bungeanum residue extracts damaged the oxygen-evolving complex structure, influenced energy capture and distribution, and inhibited the electron transport of PSII in M. aeruginosa. Furthermore, the enhanced capacity for ROS detoxification enables treated cells to sustain their photosynthetic activity. The findings of this study hold considerable relevance for the ecological management community and offer potential avenues for the practical utilization of resources in controlling algal blooms.

Camellia vietnamensis Huang is an important and famous woody oil crop with high economic value in China because of its high-quality, edible, and medicinal oil. As one of its major active components, tea saponin (triterpenoid saponin) has shown anticancer, antioxidant, bacteriostatic, and other pharmacological activities. In this study, C. vietnamensis was used as an experimental material to determine the tea saponin content and physiological activity indicators after salicylic acid (SA) treatment and to analyze the differential expression genes of key metabolic pathways in response to SA by combining transcriptome data. The results showed that SA treatment increased the content of tea saponin and total phenols in leaves; effectively promoted the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX); and decreased the content of malondialdehyde (MDA). A total of 60,038 genes, including 5871 new genes, were obtained by the RNA-seq. There were 6609 significantly differential expression genes mainly enriched in pathways such as sesquiterpenoid and triterpenoid biosynthesis, terpenoid backbone biosynthesis, diterpenoid biosynthesis, and flavonoid biosynthesis. The SA-induced key structural genes (SQS, SQE, bAS, CYP450, and UGT) and transcription factors related to the tea saponin biosynthetic pathway were screened by weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA). The results of this study could provide a theoretical basis and a new technical method to improve the content of tea saponin, with its excellent anticancer activity, in C. vietnamensis.

NTERACTIONS AMONG phosphorus (P) and micronutrients may greatly influence plant growth and soil productivity. Thus, a greenhouse investigation of a complete randomized design was conducted to highlight such interactions in which a clayey soil (enriched with either 5 mg Fe kg -1 soil , 1mg Mn kg -1 soil ,or 1.5 mg Zn kg -1 soil) received P in the form of calcium superphosphate at three rates equivalent to 6.7 (P1), 13.4 (P2, recommended dose) and 20.1 mg P kg -1 (P3). Then, the soil was planted with maize seeds (Zea mays L var f16) for 60 days. Our results showed that application of P3, but not P2, raised significantly the fraction of P in soil which was extracted by ammonium bicarbonate-diethylene Tri amine penta acetic acid (AB-DTPA-P) versus P1. Likewise, AB-DTPA extractable Fe and Mn increased significantly in soil with increasing the rate of applied P, while AB-DTPA extractable-Zn decreased. In P-Fe interaction experiment, increasing the dose of applied P enhanced significantly maize dry weights, although did not affect significantly their heights. This is because P applications led to significant increases in Fe and K contents within plant tissues. Regarding P-Mn interactions, application of P2 significantly raised Mn content within plants while the highest application rate of P (P3) diminished this content. In spite of that, maize dry weights seemed to be comparable between P2and P3 and both exhibited higher dry weights than P1. Finally, results of P-Zn interactions revealed that both N and Zn contents significantly increased within plants due to increasing the rate of applied P fertilizer. Accordingly, plant dry weights increased significantly. In conclusion, plants that received the recommended doses of P or even less need to absorb more micronutrient (Fe, Mn and Zn) from soil for metabolism and growth; yet, high P inputs increased the uptake of Fe and Zn by plants while diminished Mn uptake.
