“…While this eliminates many potential variables, factors that could attenuate or exacerbate any direct mitogenomic effects from the MWCNTs in an intact organism are beyond the scope of this study. These factors include deposition 61 of material in the lungs, other cells/tissues 62 (e.g., resident macrophages), inflammatory responses 63 to the nanomaterials, and co-exposures with other pollutants/chemicals/pathogens 64 . Another inherent limitation is the use of a submerged epithelial culture model instead of an (arguably more physiologically-relevant 65 ) air-liquid interface model.…”

“…The results pointed toward the fact that the contribution of the Trojan horse mechanism toward increased cytotoxicity depends on characteristics of drugs and explains the observed differences in experimental findings by others. For example, the decrease in toxicity of bisphenol A and 17α-ethinylestradiol in the presence of CNTs could be attributed to their high lipophilicity which results in strong adsorption on CNTs resulting lower concentrations at the target site. , Similar studies have also been reported in fish and plankton whereby highly hydrophobic molecules tend to strongly bind to CNTs, resulting in decreased bioavailability, and hence decreased toxicity, of these molecules. , In contrast, very little effect of CNTs was observed on cytotoxicity of hydrophilic species such as metal ions. Further, stronger binding of lead ions to negatively charged CNTs has been shown to reduce toxicity of lead ions compared to positively charged CNTs . Similar effects of altered toxicity of organic compounds and metal ions have also been documented with other carbonaceous nanoparticles as well as metallic nanoparticles ,, in diverse test systems.…”

“…However, these results suggest low toxicity of MSRs, especially short rods, at concentrations higher than those that have been used for carbon nanotubes. 84 …”
