Interactions between silica nanoparticles and phospholipid membranes

Abstract: Our results demonstrate that electrostatic interaction between hemolytic SNPs and model phospholipid membranes is negligible. SNPs induce membrane destabilization and adsorptive processes induced by agglomeration of phospholipid vesicles. The interaction is driven by van der Waals forces at the level of the hydration layer on the vesicles surface.

“…The reason for this nding might be that the interaction between positively charged Fe 3 O 4 @CS and the negatively charged RBC lipid layer was stronger than the Fe 3 O 4 @HA, whose surface charge was negative. 43 However, the severe aggregation could not be seen in the RBCs treated with Fe 3 O 4 @CS. A possible explanation for this nding is that Fe 3 O 4 @CS, with a positive charge, surrounded the RBC surfaces and prevents the severe aggregation of RBCs due to electrostatic repulsion.…”

“…Kettiger and co-workers [86] performed ITC measurements of NPs and SUVs. The authors used negatively and positively charged silica NPs (SNPS) 120 nm in diameter and around 30 nm POPC SUVs formed by extrusion and subsequent sonication.…”

“…Notably, MSN-FOL and FOL-MSN-BTZ seem to favor cell respiration by increasing the maximal respiration and spare respiratory capacity compared to the control ( Figure 4D). Because FR expression is negligible in BJhTERT cells, we can only hypothesize that nonspecific MSNs-plasma membrane phospholipid interactions [48] in the extracellular compartment may trigger intracellular signals that could lead to an improvement in mitochondrial respiration. Plasma membrane caveolins, for their ability to interact with MSNs [9,49] and with mitochondria [50,51], might represent good candidates in mediating these MSNs' nonspecific effects on cellular respiration, as an attempt to protect intracellular structures and activities from external environment perturbations.…”
