Interaction of Chlorhexidine With Smooth and Rough Types of Titanium Surfaces

Abstract: CHX displayed persistence at the titanium surface. The adsorption level and bacterial growth inhibition were affected by CHX concentration and titanium surface characteristics, with higher levels of adsorption and antibacterial activity with 0.2% CHX and rough titanium surface. The slow CHX release rate suggests persistence of this agent at the titanium-pellicle surface, which can provide a long-term antiplaque effect.

“…Studies have absorbed chlorhexidine to the TiO 2 layer on the titanium surface, but the gradual release period is only several days. 27 Silver has also been introduced into titania nanotubes to enhance the bactericidal ability, 28 nevertheless, its bactericidal mechanism needs further clarification. Thus, novel implant antibacterial-coating system is important.…”

“…The coated antibiotic-HA-composite exhibited a reduced infection rate compared with CaP coatings in vivo [105]. In order to reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance also non-antibiotic organic compounds with antimicrobial activity like chlorhexidine, chloroxylenol, and poly(hexamethylenebiguanide) [106][107][108][109][110][111][112] have been investigated as potential alternatives. These organic molecules are commonly used for their broad spectrum of antimicrobial action and lower risk of drug resistance.…”

“…Sterile aligner-material discs (N 5 60) (Cameo 25GAS, 0.45 pore size, Micron Separations, Inc. MSI, Westboro, MA) were placed in the filtered saliva and vortexed for 3 minutes and then dried at 37uC for 2 hours to enable adsorption of the different cleaning solutions. 16 CHX mouthwash. Sterilized saliva-coated aligner discs (N 5 25), were immersed in sterile CHX mouthwash (Lacer Co, Barcelona, Spain) for 15 minutes, washed in sterile distilled water at room temperature for 2 minutes, and dried at 37uC for 2 hours.…”
