Integrating manufacturing and R&D functions for better quality and product development performance

Abstract: PurposeThe present study aims to explore the relationship between manufacturing–research and development (R&D) integration and organizational culture in enhancing quality and product development performance (PDP).Design/methodology/approachBased on data collected from 931 manufacturing firms around world, the authors examine the proposed hypothesis by using regression analyses. In addition, PROCESS (SPSS macro) is used to test both the mediation and moderated mediation models in this study.FindingsThe find… Show more

“…First, the results of this study enrich the understanding of the benefits of quality-oriented product design practices in improving operational performance. Previous studies emphasized that quality management is very important in promoting operational performance (Huo, 2012; Kang et al ., 2022; Zhang et al ., 2019; Zhao et al ., 2011). Similarly, our findings also support the important role of quality management during the product development stage in enhancing operational performance.…”

“…Product quality has received much attention from academics and manufacturing industries over the last two decades (Baird et al ., 2011; Dahlgaard et al ., 2019; De Cerio, 2003; Flynn et al ., 1995; Gotzamani and Tsiotras, 2001; O'Neill et al ., 2016; Vaidyanathan and Devaraj, 2008). One of the reasons for the growing attention paid to product quality is because product quality is likely to determine operational performance, generate superior customer value and eventually cultivate competitive advantage (Huo, 2012; Kang et al ., 2022; Zhang et al ., 2019; Zhao et al ., 2011). Thus, it is imperative for manufacturing firms to develop quality-oriented business practices and processes that reduce manufacturing variances (Flynn et al ., 1995) and improve product quality (Baird et al ., 2011; Huo, 2012; Kang et al ., 2022; O'Neill et al ., 2016).…”
