Integrating Cyber-Physical Systems in a Component-Based Approach for Smart Homes

Abstract: Integration of different cyber-physical systems involves a development process that takes into account some solutions for intercommunicating and interoperating heterogeneous devices. Each device can be managed as a thing within the Internet-of-Things concept by using web technologies. In addition, a “thing” can be managed as an encapsulated component by applying component-based software engineering principles. Based on this context, we propose a solution for integrating heterogeneous systems using a specific c… Show more

“…The Human Component (HC) [8], the Cyber Component (CC) [9] and the Physical Component (PC) [10] make up this architecture. In order to provide a solution and enhance productivity, a smart factory framework is being created that takes into account both the cyber and physical components of the systems design.…”

“…The system processes the collected information and determines corresponding assistive services and solutions [56]. In the next step, the system controls deployed actuators to implement the determined assistive services and solutions to the physical environment, in form of reminders and technological interventions [17,19]. The assistive services and solutions that the smart buildings provide are intelligence compensations for either prevention or mitigation of unwanted situations helping those with cognitive decline to improve their quality of life (QoL) and simultaneously preserve their independence [4,30,57,58].…”

“…The application of such developments can be analyzed within the larger domain of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS). CPS is an incorporation of processes into the physical environment through robotics and human-computer interactions with computational (AI) and communicational (IoT) components [17][18][19][20]. Delivering therapeutic or assistive interventions into the built environments through controlling the planted actuators and effectors is an application of CPS in the smart building domain to provide intelligent compensations to the cognitively declined occupants.…”

“…and the surroundings include all the nearby outdoor areas of the subject. Criado et al in [63] proposed a web socket-based approach for the integration of various heterogeneous components in a smart home environment to ensure interoperability and seamless connectivity. Through the help of smart dust (minute sensors based microelectromechanical systems) the different parameters of the environment such as light, temperature, pressure, humidity, composition of gases, magnetism, and chemicals, etc., can be sensed and detected [64].…”
