Integrating BIM and augmented reality for interactive architectural visualisation

Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this research is to investigate a new approach with its supporting building information modelling (BIM) + augmented reality (AR) tool to enhance architectural visualisation in building life cycle. Traditional approaches to visualise architectural design concentrate on static pictures or three-dimensional (3D) scale models which cause problems, such as expensive design evolution, lack of stakeholders’ communication and limited reusability. The 3D animated fly-throughs st… Show more

“…Sampaio et al [59] noted that it is increasingly important to incorporate virtual reality 3D visualisation and decision support systems to perform real-time interactive visual exploration tasks. BIM visualisation research is also gaining momentum in the research community [60]. There are two categories of BIM visualisation software, the first often embedded in BIM authoring software while the second being independent of BIM software.…”

“…In line with the Wang et al (2014)'s research result, visualisation with AR helps students to create mathematical models from real world models. This is part of the mathematical modeling stage (Kaiser, 2007;Kaiser et al, 2006).…”

“…These 2D blueprints results are time-consuming to understand 3D architectural scaled model, hard-to-access conceptual design schemes with regards to the building's surrounding environment, restricts stakeholder's coordination, limited reusability and low information integration [21]. Thus to address the pressing need for collaboration and intuitive visualization for project stakeholders a BIM enabled Android AR app was developed in the present study.…”
