Integrated project delivery with BIM: An automated EVM-based approach

Abstract: The Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) in integration with Building Information Modelling/Management (BIM) is an optimal approach for delivering construction projects. This is, however fraught with complications, due to the inability of current cost management practices to determine fair risk/reward ratio in IPD arrangements. Previous research has established the advantages of Earned Value Management-based (EVM) method for risk/reward sharing, as well as, how Activity Based Costing (ABC) method can facilitate a… Show more

“…In the construction context, collaboration describes all situations where various parties work together, for example partnering, alliancing, joint ventures or networking (Hughes et al, 2012). Collaboration in construction therefore largely falls within the procurement discourse (Durdyev et al, 2019;Elghaish et al, 2019). That is, collaboration occurs by adopting delivery methods that establish collaborative arrangements in delivering projects (Kuiper and Holzer, 2013;Hughes et al, 2015).…”

“…Validation is computed using Chouquet integrals taking into account the interaction between criteria. The use of the Chouquet integral method has been considered for a robust model in which the metrics work together and has been used in various cases (Joseph Shrestha et al, 2016;Elghaish et al, 2019).…”

“…As an example, studies show that projects employing IPD have been successful in minimising defects associated with dimensional and geometric variations and as a result, improve the energy performance of buildings [9,[26][27][28][29]. Moreover, other advantages of IPD include enhancing the trust among project parties [20], minimising the gap between client expectation and design [23], and reducing the cost through the collaboration between all project parties [30].…”

“…An agreed upon, fair IPD compensation model is thus a vital precondition to successful project delivery [10,[16][17][18]. Moreover, sound cost management practices are the mainstay of IPD compensation models [19,20]. Consequently, researchers have attempted to identify those factors that affect the success of cost management practices in IPD projects, a brief description of which follows.…”
