“…[34] Yang et al [35] have successfully prepared highly photostable, fluorescent silica-coated QDs (CdS@SiO 2 and CdTe@SiO 2 ), showing reduced cytotoxicity. The shell thickness could be simply tuned through the amount of TEOS, whereas the number of QD cores was controlled by addition of polyelectrolytes, such as poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA), in the microemulsions, giving rise to either core-shell or raisin-bun-type structures ( Fig.…”

“…Additionally, this coating should endow the cores with several beneficial properties, such as the possibility of subsequent functionalization and biocompatibility, [8] which allow the use of these nanomaterials to enhance both diagnostic and therapeutic techniques (e.g., magnetic resonance imaging, MRI). [9] A number of reports have been devoted to silica coating of colloidal nanoparticles by aqueous classical methods such as Stöber synthesis, [10,11] use of silane coupling agents, [12] and the sodium silicate water-glass methodology. [13,14] Since this is a rapidly expanding field that is currently undergoing fast development, we intended to review in this progress report a selection of recent work related to various types of silica-coated nanomaterials.…”

Exaggerated anticipatory anxiety is common in social anxiety disorder (SAD). Neuroimaging studies have revealed altered neural activity in response to social stimuli in SAD, but fewer studies have examined neural activity during anticipation of feared social stimuli in SAD. The current study examined the time course and magnitude of activity in threat processing brain regions during speech anticipation in socially anxious individuals and healthy controls (HC). Method Participants (SAD n = 58; HC n = 16) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during which they completed a 90s control anticipation task and 90s speech anticipation task.

“…Furthermore, silica has been approved as safe by the U.S. Food and Drug Adminstration (FDA). Silica-based micro- or nanomaterials with hierarchical structures have been widely investigated to broaden their applications in adsorption and separation, catalysis, sensors and nanomedicine. For instance, stable Pt/mesoporous silica (Pt@mSiO 2 ) core−shell nanoparticles have been synthesized for high-temperature catalytic reactions . Yolk/SiO 2 shell structures with encapsulated Au and Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles have been developed .…”

“…Around this core-shell, some functional molecules can be deposited. 18 Recently, silica nanoparticles have been investigated as the matrix of chemosensors, and most of them are used for the detection of the fluorescence quenching species, such as molecular oxygen 19 and Cu 2+ , 20 Pb 2 + 17 ions. Reports on the elaboration of optical silica nanoparticles chemically bound with fluorophores, especially with the enhancement of the fluorescence intensity for Zn 2+ , are quite scarce.…”
