Insecticidal and repellent effects of tea tree and andiroba oils on flies associated with livestock

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the insecticidal and repellent effects of tea tree, Melaleuca alternifolia (Myrtales: Myrtaceae), and andiroba, Carapa guianensis (Sapindales: Meliaceae), essential oils on two species of fly. For in vitro studies, free-living adult flies were captured and reared in the laboratory. To evaluate the insecticidal effects of the oils, adult flies of Haematobia irritans (L.) and Musca domestica L. (both: Diptera: Muscidae) were separated by species in test cages (n = 10 per group), and … Show more

“…Even though tea tree oil was weakly (although not significantly) attractive to adult house flies in this study, it was highly repellent to 3 rd instar larvae of an Australian strain of L. cuprina at concentrations of 0.5, 2, and 5% (Callander and James ). Tea tree oil is also known to be toxic for adult house flies (Klauck et al ). Citronella oil was slightly repellent for adult house flies, although the repellency was not statistically significant.…”

Otro occurred with flies control, among these stands out the Musca domestica (often related to mastitis) and Haematobia irritans, a hematophagous insect that has caused serious damage to livestock (3,5).…”

“…This has motivated the search for efficient alternative control methods and that also have lower environmental impact. These requirements can be met using natural products, including essential oils, which have attracted the interest of many researchers (Prado et al, 2013;Pazinato et al, 2014;Klauck et al, 2014).…”
