Ingestive behavior of lambs fed diets containing castor seed meal

Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate the substitution of soybean meal for castor seed meal (CSM) in diets for feedlot lambs and the effects of these diets on their ingestive behavior. Fifty male Santa Inês lambs were used. The diets were composed of Tifton 85 hay and a concentrate containing detoxified CSM substituting 0, 25, 50, 75, or 100 % of the soybean meal. There was no effect (P > 0.05) of the CSM levels on the feeding, rumination, idle times, chews and time spent chewing per bolus, total chewing… Show more

“…In ruminants, the time spent in feed and rumination activities is influenced by food characteristic, the fiber content and the presence of anti-nutritional compounds (NICORY et al, 2015). The average time spent on rumination was 503 min day -1 , which is between the range of 8 to 9 hours considered normal for the rumination activity (ALVES et al, 2010b;VAN SOEST, 1994).…”

“…Diets with lower percentages of NDF provide a higher dry matter intake, requiring a shorter total feeding time per kg of DM by the animal, which indicates better feed and rumination efficiencies as a function of DM intake and according to Nicory et al (2015) rumination efficiency is an important mechanism to evaluate the use of low-digestibility feeds.…”

“…To achieve this purpose, feeding strategies should be better studied aiming to stabilize the supply of this product in the market, which compromises the productive chain of the region. Because of this situation, the use of the feedlot for the ovine species has emerged as a viable option due to the irregular rainfall that reduces the availability of forage, making this an attractive alternative if food sources available in the region are used (Parente et al, 2009, Nicory et al, 2015.…”
