Infrared spectra and compositional analysis of styrene/2‐ethylhexyl acrylate copolymers

Abstract: Compositional analysis of a series of free-radical emulsion polymerized styrene/2-ethylhexyl acrylate copolymers following close to random polymerization statistics was accomplished by elemental analysis, UV and IR. A satisfactory agreement was obtained between the three independent techniques. IR calibration curves were constructed based on sequence-independent infrared absorption bands determined by plotting peak intensities against the number fraction of each of the possible monad, dyad and triad structures… Show more

“…The FTIR spectra (750-3000 cm -1 ) of the monomers 2-EHA, IBOA and the mixture IBOA/2-EHA and their corresponding polymers are shown in Figure 3. Infrared spectra of monomers contain expected peaks, the band observed around 1720 cm -1 is assigned to the stretching vibration of conjugated ester -C=O; the bands observed around 1050 and 1200 cm -1 are attributed to the -CH2-O and acyl group (C-O) functions respectively [24]. Medium bands between 1375 and 1400 cm -1 correspond to asymmetric and symmetric bending vibration of methyl group and a characteristic band corresponding to the acrylic group (C=C) is observed at 810 cm -1 and 1635 cm -1 .…”

“…Polymers having a low T g are used for pressure‐sensitive adhesives. Because the polymer becomes softer as the size of the ester group increases, n ‐butyl acrylate and 2‐ethylhexylacrylate are basic components of the acrylic latices 1, 2. The T g of poly(EHA) is approximately 223 K, while that of polystyrene is 373 K. Varying the concentration of styrene in the copolymer acts as a control for the final T g .…”

“…The literature available outlines various techniques to determine copolymer composition via elemental analysis 3. Additional techniques include 13 C‐ and 1 H‐NMR,12 IR spectroscopy,2 and UV spectrophotometry 13. In this work, the analysis is done by 1 H‐NMR.…”
