Informal caregivers’ own quality of life, health status, and determinants are poorly understood despite their concern for the health of the individuals they assist. To compare the quality of life and the health determinants of older informal caregivers with those of older adults without caregiving responsibilities. An online survey was designed to investigate the quality of life and the health determinants of people aged 65 years and over, with a focus on informal caregivers. In addition to socio-demographic data, the number of informal caregivers was ascertained and the Zarit scale of caregiver burden was applied. Quality of life (SF-12) and health determinants (access to technology and level of physical activity (IPAQ)) were assessed and compared between informal caregivers and non-caregivers. A total of 111 participants were included in the study (70 ± 3.83 years, 71.2% women). The majority of respondents (91.8%) were Belgian. One-third of the respondents identified themselves as informal caregivers and declared themselves as having a severe burden (61.9 ± 15.2/88). Socio-demographic characteristics and access to technology were similar between informal caregivers and non-caregivers (p > 0.05). However, informal caregivers had a lower SF-12 score in the mental score domain (44.3 ± 10.2 vs. 50.7 ± 7.0; p = 0.004) and a lower level of physical activity (434 ± 312 METS/min/week vs. 1126 ± 815 METS/min/week; p = 0.01) than their peers. Informal caregivers reported a lower quality of life and a lower level of physical activity than their peers. Given the recognized importance of physical activity for overall health, this survey highlights the need to promote physical activity among older informal caregivers.

Introdução: as lesões por pressão (LPP) são definidas pela ruptura das estruturas da pele, decorrentes de diferentes tipos de pressões contínuas sobre um local. Os cuidadores de pessoas acometidas por LPP muitas vezes não tem experiência e/ou estudo para realizarem seus cuidados devidamente. Objetivos: verificar e debater a literatura científica atual sobre as estratégias de educação em saúde direcionadas a cuidadores de pessoas com lesão por pressão especificamente na atenção primária à saúde em um contexto brasileiro. Metodologia: utiliza a revisão de literatura do tipo narrativa, realizando a busca dos estudos nas bases de dados Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), o catálogo de Teses e Dissertações CAPES e a plataforma de pesquisa Google Scholar. Utilizando-se para seleção a resposta da questão pesquisa: Quais são as estratégias educativas voltadas a cuidadores de pessoas com lesão por pressão na atenção na primária a saúde no contexto brasileiro que são indicadas na literatura? Respeitado recorte temporal de 2010 a 2022. Resultados: foram selecionados quatro artigos na SciELO, três Teses e dissertações no catálogo de Teses e Dissertações CAPES e oito manuais, guias técnicos e cartilhas no Google Scholar, compondo um total de 15 materiais para análise. A maioria dos estudos revelou que guias, cartilhas e manuais com orientações educacionais do tipo prescritivas foram mais utilizados. Conclusão: observou-se a utilização do modelo tradicional de promover educação em saúde, conhecida como educação bancária focada em materiais e informações técnicas e prescritivas. Há limitações quanto a metodologia utilizada, no entanto revela-se a importância de realizar outras pesquisas sobre o assunto buscando conhecer as estratégias educativas realizadas no Brasil na atenção primária.

Background Family carers face challenges that could significantly affect their health and the health of those they care for. However, these challenges are not well documented in low-income settings, including Uganda. We explored the challenges of caring for someone with chronic non-communicable disease (NCD) in Uganda. Methods We conducted a qualitative exploratory study at Hospice Africa, Uganda (an urban setting) and Hampton Health Center (a rural setting) in Uganda in February and March 2021. Family carers (n = 44) were recruited using snowball and purposive sampling techniques. Data were collected using focus group discussions and in-depth interviews, gathering family carer perspectives of (a) their caring role (b) their support needs, and (c) attitudes of the wider community. In total, four focus group discussions and 10 individual interviews were completed. Results The average age of carers was 46 years old. The majority of family care was provided by female relatives, who also experienced intersectional disadvantages relating to economic opportunities and employment. Family carers carried a huge burden of care, experiencing significant challenges that affected their physical health, and material and emotional well-being. These challenges also affected the quality of care of the patients for whom they cared. Carers struggled to provide for the basic needs of the patient including the provision of medication and transport to health facilities. Carers received no formal training and limited support to carry out the caring role. They reported that they had little understanding of the patient’s illness, or how best to provide care. Conclusions As NCDs continue to rise globally, the role of family caregivers is becoming more prominent. The need to support carers is an urgent concern. Family carer needs should be prioritised in policy and resource allocation. The need for a carer’s toolkit of resources, and the enhancement of community support, have been identified.
