The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of cassava starch and corn starch films on the control of anthracnose in avocado. The fruits were inoculated with conidia suspension and were then immersed in solutions with cassava starch and corn starch alone or in combination at concentrations of 1, 2, 3 and 4% under curative and preventive methods. The variables analysed included mean damaged area, area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) and fruit fresh weight. Under the curative method, the mean damaged area and AUDPC were reduced in fruits treated with 1% and 4% cassava starch and 1% corn starch. Under the preventive method, fruits treated with 2% cassava starch or 2% corn starch alone resulted in reduced mean damaged area and AUDPC. The combinations of cassava starch and corn starch at 2, 3, and 4% were effective in reducing the mean damaged area and AUDPC under curative control. Under the preventive method, the combinations of cassava starch and corn starch at 2 and 3% reduced the AUDPC, and the mean damaged area was decreased with both starches at 3%. Scanning electron microscopy images revealed a layer of protective film on the fruit's surface that probably prevented the pathogen from penetrating. In addition, there was deformation of hyphae promoted by the action of the films.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the in vitro and in vivo potential of cassava starch film associated or not with essential oils in the control of Colletotrichum musae of banana. Were tested clove oils (Eugenia caryophyllata), thyme (Thymus vulgaris), lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus), cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) and oregano (Origanum vulgare) at 0.1% associated or not with film 2 and 3%. Mycelial growth and conidial germination in vitro and anthracnose in vivo were evaluated. In the curative and preventive controls, the fruits were inoculated with conidia before and after coating, respectively. The major components of essential oils were: eugenol, β-caryophyllene and α-humulene in clove; thymol, ρ-cymene, carvacrol and α-pinene in thyme; geranial and neral in lemongrass; trans-Cinnamaldehyde and eugenol in cinnamon; carvacrol, γ-Terpinene and linalool in oregano. In vitro, total inhibition of mycelial growth and germination of conidia with oregano oil was observed. The films in the concentrations of 2 and 3% isolated and combined with oils of lemon grass and thyme, in addition to these isolated oils, provided a reduction in the size of anthracnose lesions.

The avocado (Persea americana) is an economically important fruit in several regions around the world (Perkins et al., 2019). Its cultivation mainly takes place in regions of tropical and subtropical climates (Sharma et al., 2017). The avocado has high nutritional value because it is rich in vitamins A, C, E, and B complex, and it has high contents of carbohydrates, proteins, fibre, and monounsaturated fats (Daiuto et al., 2013). The world production of avocados in 2017 was 5,924,398 tonnes, of which Brazil's production was 213,041 tonnes (http://www.fao.org/). Despite advances in the chain of production of this fruit, its cultivation is affected by postharvest diseases, of which anthracnose is the most important (Campos-Martínez et al., 2016). Anthracnose symptoms are characterized by the formation of round lesions, which are initially brown, but subsequently grow and become dark brown to black.
