Agave tequilana Weber (Rigidae, Agavaceae), blue agave, is a native Mexican plant that has been associated with tequila since the 17th century. The tequila industry has matured over time and now has a geographical indication (Denominación de Origen; DOT). The tequila industry has grown substantially in the last 15 years (19.82% annual increase between 1995 and 2008), resulting in an increase in agave production and associated residue (leaves) and bagasse that can be used for second-generation biofuels. At a time when the biofuel industry is undergoing unprecedented changes, with diversified demand and predictions of increased competitiveness, this paper presents a review of agave landraces that have been affected by tequila production but may be beneficial for a biofuel industry. Conventional botanical studies have revealed domestication syndromes in races related to blue agave ('azul listado', 'sigüín' and 'pata de mula') specifically for production of fructans in the plant core as would be expected in mezcal agaves (including those used for tequila). Some others, such as the 'moraleño' and 'bermejo' cultivars (Sisalanae) show domestication syndrome only in the fibers, while others, such as 'chato,' A. americana L. subtilis (Americanae) show domestication syndrome in fructans and fibers and 'zopilote,' A. rhodacantha (Rigidae) a relatively low domestication syndrome. No specimens of the cultivars named 'mano larga', 'mano anchaque' and 'cucharo' were found in the Tequila Region of Origin (Western Mexico). The genetic resources from landraces ignored by the tequila industry may be valuable for both ethanol production and conservation.

Resumen: El mezcal de los alrededores del Volcán de Colima pertenece a una gran tradición productora que se sostiene en un amplio conocimiento ecológico tradicional, y en prácticas de manejo de los recursos naturales que demuestran la existencia de un vínculo inextricable entre diversidad biológica y cultural, lo cual constituye un caso ejemplar de diversidad biocultural. Los productores de mezcal en el sur de Jalisco han implementado modalidades de aprovechamiento sustentable en las más de veinte variedades locales de agave, que hacen del occidente de México una de las áreas más importantes para la conservación "in situ" de especies y variedades locales de agave mezcalero. Además el tipo de prácticas agroecológicas de estos productores reflejan claramente la importancia de la cultura indígenacampesina en la conservación de la biodiversidad.

The Mexican sport of charrería, or Mexican rodeo, developed in post-conquest Mexico as a way of preserving and celebrating traditional cowboy riding and livestock handling skills. Today, charrería is considered the national sport of Mexico and the charro (cowboy) is also a celebrated icon of Mexicanness. Special handcrafted ropes used in charrería, known as sogas finas, or charro lariats, are made from the fibers of the Agave inaequidens. The manufacture of charro ropes is an artisinal practice that requires both cultural and botanical knowlege. In the last ten years, there has been a significant decline in the A. inaequidens population in the Cerro Viejo mountain range of the central-western Mexican state of Jalisco, putting the financial wellbeing of local lariat artisans at risk. Drawing on fieldwork and laboratory analysis conducted from 2002 through 2010, we discuss the socio-cultural significance of charro lariats, detail the harvesting of A. inaequidens in relation to lariat craftsmanship, document the physical characteristics of the A. inaequidens from this region, and describe the relationship between traditional knowledge and the local economy. The goal of this research is two-fold: 1) to stimulate feedback between producers and consumers in an attempt to leverage the existing business cluster based on traditional knowledge and 2) to initiate dialogue concerning conservation, domestication, and sustainable management of the wild A. inadequidens population.
