Influence of Woven and Cross-Ply Laminates on Mechanical Properties of Coir Epoxy Composite

Abstract: This research work was concerned with the evaluation of mechanical properties; flexural strength and impact strength of coconut coir textile composites. The coir fabric reinforcement was in a form of woven and cross ply structure. The two types of laminates orientations for cross-ply structures were 0/90 degrees and 45/-45 degrees. Composites with fibre weight fraction of 30% were prepared by hand lay-up and vacuum bagging technique. Mechanisms of composites failure were examined using scanning electron micros… Show more

“…Hal ini tidak terlepas dari karakteristik karet yang memiliki kinerja menyerap energi impak yang lebih baik dibandingkan kain sintetis. Temuan ini lebih baik dari penelitian sebelumnya yang melaporkan kekuatan impak hybrid biocomposite berpenguat sabut kelapa dengan matriks epoksi, masing-masing sebesar 0.0073-0.014 J/mm 2 [21] dan 0.01 J/mm 2 [22] .…”

“…The slope of the ascending section of each curve is termed the impact bending stiffness. It represents the stiffness of composites under impact and bending induced at the beginning of the impact process [18]. Typical load-displacement curves of the laminate composite structure subjected to impact loading have shown three kinds of situations, including rebounding in 5 J case due to impact energy was not high enough to infiltrate full penetration and frictional force between the impactor and the composite plate [19], penetration in 15 J and perforation in 25 J.…”

“…Our preliminary research using the vacuum bagging method also proved that impact strength of woven coir composite greatly outperforms cross-ply and angle-ply composites. 4 Generally, weave density has a decisive influence on the utilisation of fabric for some technical applications. Weave density refers to the number of yarns per unit dimension along the principal yarn directions and it affects the yarn crimp and fabric areal density.…”
