“…As detailed in the Introduction, it has been suggested that exogenous estrogen may have antipsychotic properties or increase response to APDs in women with schizophrenia. Although the latter has been supported in several studies (Agius et al, 2009;Akhondzadeh et al, 2003;Cyr et al, 2002;Korhonen et al, 1995;Kulkarni, 2009;Kulkarni et al, 1996Kulkarni et al, , 2001Kulkarni et al, , 2008aLindamer et al, 2001;Mortimer, 2007;Rao and Kolsch, 2003), other studies reported that estrogen treatment failed to improve or even worsened symptoms (Bergemann et al, 2005;Chua et al, 2005;Gattaz et al, 1994;Lindamer et al, 2001; for review see Mortimer, 2007). We previously provided support for antipsychotic capacity of 17b-estradiol by showing a synergistic effect of ineffective doses of 17b-estradiol and APDs in reversing OVX-induced disrupted LI , and have replicated such a synergistic effect here for amphetamine-induced disrupted LI.…”

“…Postmenopausally, there is elevation in the severity of symptoms and reduced response to treatment, as well as an additional onset peak in women after the age of 40-45 (Horacek et al 2006;Kulkarni et al 1996;Kulkarni et al 2008;Lane et al 1999;Salokangas 1995;Saugstad 1989;Seeman and Lang 1990). Likewise, during reproductive years, intensity of psychosis in schizophrenic women fluctuates along the menstrual cycle so that women are most vulnerable to exacerbation and relapse during low estrogen phases of the cycle (Gattaz et al 1994;Hallonquist et al 1993;Opjordsmoen 1991;Riecher-Rossler et al 1994;Seeman 1996). Estrogen level fluctuations correlate also with treatment efficacy, so that during high levels of estrogen, schizophrenic women require lower doses of antipsychotic drugs (APDs; Gattaz et al 1994;Grigoriadis and Seeman 2002).…”

“…Sie schlossen daraus, dass Östrogene wie ein "endogenes Neuroleptikum" wirken. Zusammen mit Gattaz et al [31] fanden wir bei schizophreniekranken Frauen, die während des Perimenstruums stationär aufgenommen worden waren, im weiteren Verlauf ein vergleichsweise besseres therapeutisches Ansprechen, möglicherweise bedingt durch den postmenstruell dann unmittelbar ansteigenden Estradiolspiegel.…”
