The Yangtze Estuary is the largest estuary in the western Pacific Ocean, and harbors a high diversity of fish fauna. In this study, larval fish were surveyed monthly across three sections within the southern branch of the Yangtze Estuary (SBYE). A total of 49 taxa were collected, with 51.4% of the identified species being freshwater fishes. The collected numbers of larval taxa in the upper, middle, and lower sections were 22, 28, and 43, respectively. Species with differing salinity adaptations displayed different patterns along the direction of freshwater input. The collected numbers of larval taxa were 47 and 29 in the near-shore and mid-stream areas, respectively; and the abundances of larval fish in the near-shore areas tended to be higher than in the mid-stream areas in all the three sections. Larval fish occurred year-round with two peaks of abundance. Our results suggest that the freshwater input was the dominant factor shaping larval fish assemblage structure and dynamics within the SBYE. Influences of the Three Gorges Dam and South-to-North Water Transfer Project on larval fish assemblages within the SBYE should be considered with regard to conservation practices.

This study aimed to identify the spatial and temporal patterns of composition and distribution of early life‐history stages of fish along an estuarine gradient. Samples were collected quarterly between April 2010 and January 2011 using conical‐cylindrical plankton nets in the Vaza Barris estuarine river system (NE Brazil). A total of 38,781 fish eggs and 3,526 larvae, representing 20 families and 42 taxa, were caught. The most abundant larval taxa were Microgobius meeki, Ctenogobius gr. smaragdus/boleosoma, Gobionellus oceanicus, Ctenogobius gr. stigmaticus/saepepallens/shufeldti, Bairdiella ronchus, Achirus sp., Trinectes sp., Stellifer rastrifer and S. stellifer, accounting together for 34.5% of the total catch. Ichthyoplankton distributions were characterized by high seasonal and spatial variability mainly attributed to the environmental characteristics of the estuary. Overall, lower estuarine region served as important accumulation areas for ichthyoplankton, concentrating the greatest diversity and abundance. Salinity gradient, water temperature, and inorganic nutrients were the main variables that affected the larval fish assemblages, presumably influencing spawning, development and survival of individuals or through their effect on food supply. Moreover, this study reinforced the concept that hydrological variations may have a strong influence on estuarine species retention and marine species immigration. Finally, this study highlights the importance of estuaries for the growth and maintenance of stocks of fish species, and the development of strategies to protect these habitats is of utmost relevance.

El objetivo del estudio es analizar los patrones temporales en la distribución de Beloniformes en un estuario intermitente tropical. Durante 19 meses se realizaron muestreos en ciclos de 24 h cada mes, tomando muestras cada 2 horas (442 muestreos en total). Simultáneamente, se registraron in situ variables abióticas y bióticas, así como variables con registros histórico-regionales. Se capturaron 6 especies, de las cuales Strongylura notata notata mostró un pulso significativo en mayo-agosto, mientras que S. timucu, Hyporhamphus unifasciatus e H. meeki mostraron pulsos significativos en febrero-abril y diciembre (Permanova, p < 0.04). De acuerdo con las correlaciones inter-set de un análisis de correspondencia canónica, la presencia estacional de S. notata notata estuvo principalmente determinada por días largos, altas temperaturas atmosféricas y precipitaciones, mientras que S. timucu e H. unifasciatus se relacionaron con el fitoplancton y zooplancton. Solo S. notata notata presentó diferencias significativas a nivel nictémero (Permanova, p < 0.0005). Las variables histórico-regionales mostraron mayor influencia sobre los patrones de distribución de las especies, que las variables in situ. Un muestreo intensivo permitió conocer de forma más completa las condiciones que determinan los patrones de migración, lo cual contribuye a la conservación y manejo de estas especies.
