Influence of temperature on the passive control of a rotating machine using wires of shape memory alloy in the suspension

Abstract: This paper deals with the passive control of mechanical vibrations of rotating machines using wires of shape memory alloys (SMA). Unlike other classes of smart materials, the proposed technique allows for simpler mechanical construction and offers new technological possibilities. Both numerical simulations and experimental tests have been performed in the present investigation. The numerical results reveal that the SMA wires can reduce the amplitude of lateral vibrations of a rotating shaft to acceptable level… Show more

“…In addition to complex mechanical systems, the SMA shock absorber can effectively reduce the transverse vibration amplitude of the rotating system. Braga et al [181] dealt with the passive control of mechanical vibrations of rotating machines using wires of SMA and verified that the temperature of the SMA wire could be employed to control the vibration control system.…”

“…SMA-ME has been used in many types of designs, such as helical springs [9][10][11][12][13], wires [14,15], and special designs [16]. For SMA-SE, the number of applications has also been growing lately-particularly, applications in helical springs [17][18][19], wires [2,[20][21][22][23], and special designs [24].…”
