NiTi alloys have drawn significant attention in biomedical and aerospace fields due to their unique shape memory effect (SME), superelasticity (SE), damping characteristics, high corrosion resistance, and good biocompatibility. Because of the unsatisfying processabilities and manufacturing requirements of complex NiTi components, additive manufacturing technology, especially laser powder bed fusion (LPBF), is appropriate for fabricating NiTi products. This paper comprehensively summarizes recent research on the NiTi alloys fabricated by LPBF, including printability, microstructural characteristics, phase transformation behaviors, lattice structures, and applications. Process parameters and microstructural features mainly influence the printability of LPBF-processed NiTi alloys. The phase transformation behaviors between austenite and martensite phases, phase transformation temperatures, and an overview of the influencing factors are summarized in this paper. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the mechanical properties with unique strain-stress responses are also explained, which comprise tensile mechanical properties, thermomechanical properties (e.g., critical stress to induce martensite transformation, thermo-recoverable strain, and superelasticity strain), damping properties and hardness. Moreover, several common structures (e.g., a negative Poisson’s ratio structure and a diamond-like structure) are considered, and the corresponding studies are summarized. It illustrates the various fields of application, including biological scaffolds, shock absorbers, and driving devices. In the end, the paper concludes with the main achievements from the recent studies and puts forward the limitations and development tendencies in the future.

Vibration Reduction of a Timoshenko Beam with Multiple Parallel Nonlinear Energy Sinks

A nonlinear energy sink is a promising device to reduce structural vibrations. In this work, the vibration reduction performances of multiple parallel nonlinear energy sinks attached to a short beam are investigated based on the Timoshenko beam theory. The dynamic equations of a vibration reduction system subjected to a harmonic excitation are established. The frequency responses are analyzed based on Galerkin discretization and the harmonic balance method, and the accuracy is verified by the Runge–Kutta method. An optimization method based on the genetic algorithm is proposed for the number, location, and cubic stiffness of the nonlinear energy sinks. The study reveals that, with the same total mass, multiple parallel nonlinear energy sinks can achieve a larger vibration reduction ratio than a single nonlinear energy sink. The parameter influences of the nonlinear energy sinks are revealed, and unstable responses with large cubic stiffness are presented. The optimal locations of the multiple parallel nonlinear energy sinks are related to low-order modal shapes. A larger reduction ratio on the resonant amplitude can be achieved compared to a uniform distribution of the nonlinear energy sinks. The optimal locations and cubic stiffness are related to the number of nonlinear energy sinks. In the studied case, the optimal number of nonlinear energy sinks was two.

This work presents an experimental study related to the mechanical performance of a special design spring fabricated with a superelastic shape memory alloy (SMA-SE). For the experimental testing, the spring was coupled in a rotor machine, aiming to attenuate the mechanical vibration when the system went through a natural frequency without any external power source. It was verified that the reduction in instabilities stemmed from the better distribution of vibration force in the proposed device, as well as the damping capacity of the spring material. These findings showed that the application of the M-Shape device of SMA-SE for three different cases could reduce vibration up to 23 dB when compared to the situations without, and with, 1.5 mm of preload. The M-Shape device was shown to be efficient in reducing the mechanical vibration in a rotor system. This was due to the damping capacity of the SMA-SE material, and because the application did not require any external source of energy to generate phase transformation.
