“…Change in virulence or in other characteristics of the virus has not been prominently mentioned in studies of virus carrier systems (Ginsberg, 1958). Wheeler and Canby (1959), for instance, studied carrier cultures of herpes virus using antibody containing culture procedures not very different from those used by us and by Hoggan and Roizman, and yet they apparently did not observe changes in the characteristics of the virus. In some carrier systems studied by other investigators, the virus has ceased to produce CPE, but this has usually been attributed to an increase in cell resistance by cell selection or some other mechanism, such as interference.…”

“…The sequence of events outlined above for persistent MAL cell infections in the presence of AB suggested that the changes noted in the severity of the infections after the appearance of the GC variant were partially dependent on fluctuations in the proportion of virus-resistant cells in the population. This requirement for resistant cells makes it improbable that similar changes would occur in persistent HSV infections where all of the cells were susceptible to virus (1,3,10,13,16,17). If viral changes comparable to the NP and GC variants occurred in such infections, one would expect to see an increase in the severity of the infections, such as described in the MAL cell system during phases 1 and 3, since such a change could be accounted for by an increase in the amount of infectious virus available for disseminating the infection.…”
