Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To assess vitamin E levels in the breast milk, analyzing the prematurity and the birth weight influence in α-tocopherol concentration of colostrum milk. METHODS: Cross-sectional study, in which the colostrum was collected from 93 nursing mothers in a public maternity of Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Northeast Brazil. The newborns were classified based on gestational age and birth weight. The analysis of α-tocopherol in the milk was carried out by high performance liquid chromatography. RESULTS: The α-… Show more

“…Weber et al (27) and Baydas et al (28) studied women who had a preterm birth in Germany and Turkey, respectively, and they found higher serum α-tocopherol concentrations than those observed in the present study, which may be explained by the different dietary habits in those two countries compared with Brazil. The vitamin E levels in the 0-h colostrum of the CG and SG were similar to those reported by other studies of women who had term births in Brazil (26,29) , Turkey (30) and the USA (31) as well as women who had preterm births in Spain (32) and Brazil (33) .…”

“…Because newborns are more susceptible to oxidative damage and the placental transfer of vitamin E is limited, breast milk must provide the appropriate amounts of this micronutrient to the newborn (1,6) . The a-tocopherol levels in the colostrum and mature milk of the study sample are similar to those found in puerperal Brazilians and Cubans (17,41,42) and lower than those found in puerperal Spaniards (43) .…”

“…7,10e13,16,24e30 The retinol concentrations were close to those reported in different groups of Brazilian lactating women 29,30 and lower than those of Canadian, 24 German, 26 Turkish, 28 Japanese 11 , and Chinese 12 lactating women, but higher than those of lactating women from Poland 13 and Bangladesh. 25 The colostrum alpha-tocopherol concentrations in Tunisian women were close to those of lactating women from Brazil, 29,30 Poland, 7 and Turkey, 28 but were about the half of those reported in lactating women from Germany 26 and Spain 27 (Table 3). 7,10e13,16,21,24e26,28e30 In accordance with the literature, this study revealed a large inter-subject variation in the concentration of the two vitamins, especially vitamin A.…”
