Influence of nano-additive on performance and emission characteristics of a diesel engine running on neat neem oil biodiesel

Abstract: This work investigates the experimental study to examine the operation characteristics of a neat neem oil methyl ester (BD100) along with silver oxide nano-particles as a metal-based additive in various mass fractions. Silver oxide nano-particle is mixed into 100% of BD100 at 5 and 10 ppm. The experimental investigation on diesel engine reveals that the addition of silver oxide nano-particles to BD100 resulted in enhancement of brake thermal efficiency (BTE) with a reduction in brake specific fuel consumption … Show more

“…At 20% load all test fuels is found to have a similar smoke opacity this shows that less mass flow rate at initial load has not much different in combustion. But as the load is increased a rapid rise of smoke opacity is seen for all the fuels 50,51 this might be due to outflow of some unburnt fuel through the exhaust valve as more fuel is induced at high load 9,10,20,40,42,54 . At full load D100, D80B10RW10, D70B20RW10 and D60B30RW10 shows 16.7%, 12.7%, 13.8%, and 17.66% smoke opacity.…”

“…However, the water emulsified diesel fuel increases the ignition delay period and decreases engine performance. Surfactants and additives can be used to improve emulsion stability and reduce the ignition delay period (268). The air-fuel mixing and complete combustion of biodiesel can be improved by nanoadditives, such as Al, ZnO, TiO 2 , and Ag (269).…”
