Donax trunculus is a much‐appreciated commercial clam whose natural populations have been overexploited in southern–western Spain during the last decades. In order to control the decrease of natural beds, local governments establish annual closed seasons based on socioeconomic reasons, such as economic necessity or tourism interest. The objective of this study was to develop an efficient tool for predicting gonadal stages based on environmental condition data. This tool will allow for an improvement in fishery management since in this manner the closed season can be based on the reproductive cycle. The natural population's reproductive cycle was studied for more than 2 years. The obtained gonadal and condition indexes (GI and CI) values were statistically related to environmental conditions, specifically surface seawater temperature (SST) and chlorophyll‐a (Chlo‐a) levels with these data being provided from satellite remote sensing observations (SRS). The best statistical relationship was obtained between GI and the SST registered 60 days before bivalve sampling (SST‐60). The regression equation allows for an estimate of GI value based on the SST‐60 and, as each value is related with one gonadal stage (resting, maturation, ripe), for prediction of the reproductive cycle. Therefore, the closed season can be established when most of the population is in the ripe stage and can be adjusted taking into account the possible temperature variations across the years. For ease of use, GI values estimated with this tool have also been converted using different colours onto a map of wedge clam reproductive stages in its natural beds.

We analysed the effect of temperature, coupled with food ingestion rate (IR), on the fatty acid (FA) profile of female and male clams conditioned in two groups: L (low IR at 14 and 18°C) and H (high IR at 18 and 22°C). Significant differences for group L, both 18L and 14L with low IR and slow gonadal development, owed to differences in energy balance between 18L clams (negative energy balance) and 14L clams (positive energy balance). Plasmalogens (DMA 18:0) and non-methylene-interrupted FAs might protect against reactive oxygen species and preserve the integrity of the cell membranes during food stress in 18L clams. Differences in composition for group H, both 18H and 22H with high food intake, positive energetic balance and complete and similar gonadal occupation index (GOI), probably owed to the greater energy levels at 18°C than at 22°C. Clams at 22°C H increased the oxidation of short-chained PUFA 18:3x3 and 18:3x6 to maintain the same GOI as 18H clams. Regarding the sexual differences, the greater accumulation of 20:5x3 and 20:4x6 in females might be related with oocyte maturation and release during spawning, while the greatest levels of 22:6x3 in males might be involved in spermatocyte membranes synthesis.

Gonadic conditioning and maturation of queen clam Dosinia ponderosa fed three microalgae (Isochrysis galbana, Tetraselmis suecica and Chaetoceros calcitrans) at three temperatures (20, 25 and 30°C) were assessed. Histological analysis showed six gonadic stages, indicators of maturity. The evaluation included sex proportion, oocyte diameter and frequency of gonadic stages after 22 (middle of trial) and 44 days (end of trial). At day 22, around 60% of females conditioned at 20°C, reached stage III (advances grade of maturation) when fed T. suecica. At day 44, around 50% of females were on stage III, conditioned at 20 and 25°C and fed T. suecica and C. calcitrans. For males, the best combination was C. calcitrans at 20 and 25°C. The temperature of 30°C resulted inadequate for maturation, especially when fed the diatom Isochrysis galbana. High mortalities occurred at that temperature with the three microalgal diets, especially in females. The results permits conclude that T. suecica and C. calcitrans are good sources of feed for D. ponderosa and that the best range of temperature for gonadic development is 22-25°C. These results may be basic for a best management and culture of this clam.
