Abstract: Contrasting the equal contribution of nuclear genetic material from maternal and paternal sources to offspring, passage of mitochondria, and thus mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), is uniparental through the egg. Since mitochondria in eggs are ancestral to all somatic mitochondria of the next generation and to all cells of future generations, oocytes must prepare for the high energetic demands of maturation, fertilization and embryogenesis while simultaneously ensuring that their mitochondrial genomes are inherited in… Show more

“…Mitochondria in the oocytes played a fundamental role in the early embryo development (Woods, Khrapko, & Tilly, ). To verify this hypothesis, the roles of PPARGC1A (a master regulator of mitochondrial biogenesis) in early rabbit embryo development were investigated by gain or loss of the maternal storage mRNA of PPARGC1A at the one‐cell stage.…”

“…One difficulty is sequencing errors induced through e.g. PCR, which hampers our ability accurately measure mtDNA mutation within highly heterogeneous samples (Woods et al, 2018). Morris et al (2017) have suggested that single cells are highly heterogeneous in mtDNA mutation, with each mitochondrion possessing 3.9 single-nucleotide variants on average.…”

“…Mitochondria are specialized cytoplasmic organelles that occupy a substantial portion of the cellular volume, and are the catalysts of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) synthesis through the metabolism of carbohydrates and fatty acids contained in the cytoplasm, as well as from the external medium of the cells (Ferreira et al, 2009;Woods et al, 2018). The efficiency of the mitochondrial matrix in the conversion of pyruvate to ATP is essential for oocyte maturation, fertilization, and subsequent embryonic development (Ferreira et al, 2009;Sanchez-Lazo et al, 2014).…”
