Abstract: Magnetic circular birefringence (MCB) is decomposed into diamagnetic and paramagnetic terms for arbitrary values of the fields on the atom and the influence of crystal field on these terms is considered. It is shown that a crystal field is the necessary condition for an existence of the temperature-independent term in the paramagnetic part of MCB and the properties of this term are considered taking into account the mixing of states inside and between atomic terms.
