Influence of Combustion Duration on the Performance and Emission Characteristics of a Spark-Ignition Engine Fueled with Pure Methanol and Ethanol

Abstract: In this research, we estimated and summarized the effects of combustion duration on the performance and emission characteristics of a spark-ignition engine using pure methanol and ethanol as fuels, which have not been previously presented. From the results, we demonstrated that an increase in combustion duration causes a decrease in peak firing temperature and peak firing pressure and an increase in trapped residual gas. The level of trapped residual gas when using ethanol as fuel is higher than that of methan… Show more

“…In addition, the flame temperature is low at lean and rich mixtures 29 . The result obtained in this work collaborates with those obtained in previous works 28,29 . In addition, the observation made on the variation of combustion duration as a function of LPG/diesel fuel ratio strengthen the results obtained during this work on the peak of in cylinder pressure, emitted smoke, engine performance and NOx.…”

“…The CA50 value, according to the optimization assumptions of the engine cycle, should be 10 deg aTDC. Shortening the duration of combustion in the engine results in an increase in its efficiency (ITE) and the value of the average indicated pressure and, at the same time, a decrease in specific fuel consumption [29,30]. The combustion time affects the use of the energy contained in the fuel, increasing the combustion efficiency, which will also affect the exhaust gas temperature and then the exhaust emissions [31].…”
