Infection of Alstroemeria Plants with Tomato yellow ring virus in Iran

Abstract: Alstroemeria cv. Ovation plants with virus-like necrotic spots and streaks on leaves and petals were observed in greenhouses in Khorasan Razavi (Mashhad) and Markazi (Mahallat) provinces, Iran. Samples with virus-like symptoms reacted positively in enzymelinked immunosorbent assay with a polyclonal antibody raised against Tomato yellow ring virus (TYRV) nucleocapsid (N) protein. TYRV-specific primers were used in a reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction to amplify the N gene. The deduced amino acid se… Show more

“…TSWV also infects many weed species which may contribute significantly to its epidemiology as virus reservoirs (Chatzivassiliou et al, 2001) TYRV has also a large host range including crops and ornamental plants produced/grown outdoors and in protected environments. It infects tomato, tomato, pepper, potato, eggplant, cucumber, peanut, French beans and ornamental plants such as chrysanthemum, gazania, cineraria and anemone (Beikzadeh et al, 2012;CABI, online;Ghotbi et al, 2005;Pourrahim et al, 2007).TYRV is also reported to infect some weeds species as well (Ghotbi et al, 2005)…”

“…In 2014, new orthotospovirus species named tomato yellow ring orthotospovirus (TYRV), was found in greenhouse tomatoes for the first time [ 24 ] and since then its presence in Poland has been observed in a single or mixed infection. The virus was first reported in Iran as tomato yellow fruit ring virus (TYFRV) in 2002 [ 25 ] and later was detected on subsequent economic plants such as potato, soya, peanut pepper, and ornamental plants such as chrysanthemum, gazania, cineraria, anemone and alstroemeria [ 26 , 27 , 28 , 29 , 30 ]. In addition, in 2012 it was detected in tomato plants in Kenya [ 31 ].…”

“…To date 18 viruses have been reported from alstroemeria plants (Table S1) [293242] and among those are isolates from five different orthotospovirus species i.e. , TSWV, impatiens necrotic spot virus (INSV), iris yellow spot virus (IYSV) [32], tomato yellow ring virus (TYRV) [35] and alstroemeria necrotic streak virus (ANSV) [34]. From these, TSWV has the largest (natural and experimental) host range, exceeding more than 1350 species.…”

“…From these, TSWV has the largest (natural and experimental) host range, exceeding more than 1350 species. INSV infects at least 300 host species, and mainly ornamentals [ 7 ], while IYSV and TYRV have a smaller host range and are frequently found in onion, leek and a few ornamentals [ 12 , 35 , 43 , 44 ]. ANSV has been isolated most recently from alstroemeria in Colombia and, together with TSWV and INSV, clusters within the clade of American/New-World orthotospoviruses [ 2 ].…”
