Infection of Human Retinal Pigment Epithelium with Chlamydia trachomatis

Abstract: PurposeLittle is known about the susceptibility of posterior segment tissues, particularly the human retinal pigment epithelium (hRPE), to Chlamydia trachomatis. The purpose of the study was to investigate the possibility of infecting the hRPE with Chlamydia trachomatis, and to examine the infectivity of different Chlamydia trachomatis clinical isolates for hRPE cells and the hRPE cell response to the infection.MethodsCultured hRPE and McCoy cells were inoculated with eight Chlamydia trachomatis (serovar E) cl… Show more

“…The RPE is a target for numerous pathogens including viruses, such as Ebola [40], CMV [41,60], Varizella Zoster [61], and Influenza virus [62] or bacteria such as Chlamydia trachomatis [63]. In this context, the eye has been proposed to act as a reservoir, in particular for Ebola virus [18,40,64].…”

“…21 The findings of these previous reports support the concept that mycoplasma directly stimulates leukocytes, thereby initiating the inflammatory responses by a mechanism that differs from the other bacteria. In contrast, RPE infected with chlamydia has been reported to be able to upregulate secretion of IL-8, 22 IL-6, and VEGF. 23 Thus, mycoplasma infection might also have influenced the cytokine production of RPE cells, thereby enhancing the ocular inflammation and neovascularization in our current study cases.…”
