Infection, dermatitis, increased IgE, and impaired neutrophil chemotaxis. A possible relationship

Abstract: Eleven patients with recurrent bacterial infections were found to have impaired neutrophil chemotaxis. The infections were primarily staphylococcal abscesses involving the skin and the respiratory tract. All patients had chronic eczematour dermatitis and an elevated level of serum IgE. The peripheral blood eosinophil count was equal to or greater than 10% of the circulating leukocytes in 10 of 11 patients. Associated findings in some patients included urticaria and oral or cutaneous Candida infection. These o… Show more

“…There have been several human case reports of recurrent, staphylococcal pyoderma with neutrophilic chemotactic deficits and eosinophilia, but most of these patients also had increased serum immunoglobulin E concentrations, pruritis, and other allergic manifestations [7,11,151. Other than a persistent eosinophilia, the dog showed no pruritis or other signs indicating allergic involvement.…”

“…Increased eosinophil infiltration was seen in some human cases of recurrent staphylococcal pyoderma, but in most instances the diagnosis was chronic non-specific dermatitis or psoriasiform dermatitis [7].…”

“…However, in vivo (skin window tests) and ex vivo (chemotaxis chambers) migration assays indicated that PMN of HIES patients showed a defect in migration towards neutrophil chemoattractants, such as fMLP and C5a [1][2][3][4]10,15,[20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28]. Although the migratory defects in the ex vivo studies were not a consistent feature in all HIES patients, and at times varied within a patient over time, they may very well contribute to the increased susceptibility of HIES patients to infections [1][2][3][4][5][6]15,20,27].…”

“…Consistent with Soodabeh results ( Khalkhali and Mojgani, 2018 ), we also observed the decreased serum levels of ALT and ALP in the treated animals, which might suggest a better functioning of the liver in the treated animals than the controls. It has been well acknowledged that increased peripheral blood neutrophils or eosinophils are well-known indicators of bacterial infection ( Dahl et al, 1976 ; Zhou et al, 2000 ). Therefore, detecting blood physiological indexes affected by strains is of great importance.…”
