Infant position in neonates receiving mechanical ventilation

Abstract

The prone position was found to slightly improve the oxygenation in neonates undergoing mechanical ventilation. However, we found no evidence concerning whether particular body positions during the mechanical ventilation of the neonate are effective in producing sustained and clinically relevant improvements.

The effectiveness of quarter turn from prone in maintaining respiratory function in premature infants

“…Although there were no other significant findings, the fact that quarter turn from prone was not worse than the other positions for any of the respiratory outcome measures would suggest that it is a beneficial position and enables the infants to establish an efficient work rate and pattern of breathing that are similarly found in the prone position . This finding promotes an opportunity to investigate whether quarter turn from prone can offer additional benefits over prone to alleviate potential issues that have been associated with the prone position, such as SIDS, handling complications, posturing and developmental delays …”
