Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry in separation techniques: Recent trends in phosphorus speciation

Abstract: Inductively coupled plasma-MS (ICP-MS) and its combined use with molecular mass spectrometric techniques have become the most promising detection techniques in speciation studies. High sensitivity and element specificity of ICP-MS has the advantage of detecting trace amounts of the species of interest in complex matrices. This review is divided into two parts. In the first part, suitable use of ICP-MS either online or offline with currently used separation techniques such as HPLC, CE, and gel electrophoresis i… Show more

“…This review will focus only on the identification of seleno-/phospho-/metallo-proteins, structure-function relationships of metalloproteins and clinically used metallodrugs, as well as the discussion of the relevant analytical approaches. Readers are referred to some other excellent reviews in this field, either general (e.g., Haraguchi [22] , Łobinśki et al [21,27] , Sun et al [28] , Chance et al [23] , Szpunar [20] , Bettmer [25] , López-Barea and Gómez-Ariza [29] ) or method-oriented (e.g., Łobinśki et al [10,17] , Shah and Caruso [18] , Aebersold and Mann [16] , Szpunar [30] , Chance et al [31] , Gao et al [32] , Prange and Pröfrock [33] ).…”

“…The former produces complete genome DNA sequences for a living organism, whereas the latter aims to study the localization, structure, function and interactions of the complete set of proteins produced in a cell, tissue or organism [15] . Recent developments in highthroughput sample separation, and especially soft ionization mass spectrometry techniques, have made major contributions to the proteomic characterization of proteins in system biology [16][17][18] .…”

“…Caruso et al [41] emphasized hyphenated CE techniques in use for speciation analysis in the assessment of metal toxicity. Other examples of manuscripts published to cover various aspects of CE speciation analysis with ICP-MS detection present an issue by Uden et al [35] on selective detection and identification of selenium-containing compounds and an in-depth review paper by Shah and Caruso [38] on phosphorus speciation. CE methods are increasingly of value in bioinorganic speciation analysis, and recent progress in using ICP-MS and ESI-MS as detectors applied to the emerging areas of metalloproteomics and metallomics was a part of an extensive literature treatment by Szpunar [4].…”

“…Quantitation of adefovir/Hp/Hb conjugates in biological matrices could be also carried out with high specificity and sensitivity using Ga as a tag by introducing a slight modification to the procedure described in the present work. In this case, Ga/adefovir ratio can be determined by measuring the Ga/P ratio in the conjugate sample by ICP MS (despite interferences from [58], ICP MS allows phosphorus to be monitored with a detection limit in the sub-ppb range [59]). Lastly, the sensitivity of detection and quantitation of exogenous Hp or Hp/ drug conjugates based on metal tags may be further improved by exploring the utility of other metals beyond gallium, since protoporphyrin IX can be substituted with a variety of nonferric metals [60].…”
