“…The distribution of these tumors was restricted to the wings (9 tumors), body (5 tumors) and legs (3 tumors). This rate of spontaneous frequency, with a distribution of tumors primarily on the wings and the body of the fly, was also reported by Sidorov et al (2001). They indicated that the tumor frequencies on the wing and on the notum are the highest among all the organs because they have the largest number of cells and the longest period of cell proliferation.…”

“…Considering that the appearance of tumors is present only in the homozygosis phase due to genetic loss, wts is thought to be a tumor suppressor gene (Justice et al, 1995). Sidorov et al (2001) induced epithelial tumor clones in Drosophila using a lineage heterozygotic for the tumor suppressor gene wts. They studied 10 compounds of five chemical groups: polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbonates (PAH), aromatic amines, derivatives of heterocyclic aromatic N-nitrosamines, and platinum complex materials, to see how efficient they were at generating tumors.…”

“…There are higher probabilities of heterozygosis loss of the wts marker in locations with a large number of cells. The results obtained in the present investigation, for tumor frequency in the D. melanogaster appendices are in agreement with data in the literature, which shows a greater tendency to heterozygosis loss of the wts gene in appendices with a greater number of cells (SIDOROV et al, 2001;NEPOMUCENO, 2009;COSTA et al, 2011;FURTADO;NEPOMUCENO, 2012).…”

“…The Epithelial Tumor Detection Test in D. melanogaster is a test used to diagnose tumor in flies, caused by xenobiotics (SIDOROV et al, 2001;NEPOMUCENO, 2009;COSTA et al, 2011;FURTADO;NEPOMUCENO, 2012;ORSOLIN et al, 2012). This test uses the strain of D. melanogaster having the marker wts (Warts) gene, that when expressed in the wild condition acts as a tumor suppressor gene (XU et al, 1995).…”

“…For example, teratogenic effects of AFB 1 were observed on fetuses of hamster, mice, rat and cow by Aleksandrowicz and Smyk (1973). These teratogenic effects were also found as follows: decreases in body size and wing length (Lalor et al, 1976), formation of tumor on different body parts (Sidorov et al, 2001), hepatocarcinogen effects at vertebrates (Pier, 1981). These findings are in accordance with our results.…”
