Induced ADH gene expression and enzyme activity in pollinated pistils of Solanum tuberosum

Abstract: The regulation of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) in relation to in vivo pollen lube growth ol' Sola tium tuberosum was investigated. Adh gene expression as well as ADH enzyme activity were induced in pollinated pistils. The induced ADH isozyme in pollinated pistils is not present in pollen or anthers. The same ADH isozyme is induced in leaves submerged in water. The signifi cance of the induction of ADH activity for pollen tube growth is discussed.

“…Reports that alcohol is present within the pollen tube, and possibly also in stylar tissue, is based on the presence and activity of alcohol dehydrogenases. This suggests that less aerobic, higher ethanol, and carbon dioxide concentrations may exist within the style than on the stigma (Bucher et al 1995;Tadege and Kuhlemeier 1997;van Eldik et al 1997;Porterfield et al 1999;Mellema et al 2002).…”

“…Plant ADHs are involved in the development of different organs, stress responses, and metabolite synthesis. For instance, ADH expression occurs in a developmentally regulated manner during flower development 14,15 and fruit ripening, 16−19 where it is induced by various environmental stresses. 20−22 ADHs are also involved in metabolic pathways during seed storage and fungal infection.…”
