Abstract: Since lean premixed combustion allows for fuel-efficiency and low emissions, it is nowadays state of the art in stationary gas turbines. In the long term, it is also a promising approach for aero engines, when safety issues like lean blowout (LBO) and flame flashback in the premixer can be overcome. While for the use of hydrogen the LBO limits are extended, the flashback propensity is increased. Thus, axial air injection is applied in order to eliminate flashback in a swirl-stabilized combustor burning premixe… Show more

“…The case investigated here is non-reacting at a Reynolds number of 58 000 based on the nozzle diameter D and the bulk velocity at the nozzle exit. Additional details about the experimental set-up can be found in Reichel, Terhaar & Paschereit (2015). The mean flow field and the spatially averaged power spectral density (PSD) are depicted in figure 8, with the Strouhal number based on the same length and velocity scale as the Reynolds number (St = f D/u bulk ).…”

“…Studies have shown that these largescale precessing structures found in cold flows are also present in combustion. The PVC has a strong influence on the flame shape and position, pollutant formation and resonance phenomena (Chterev et al 2014;Reichel et al 2015;Oberleithner et al 2015;Ghani et al 2015;Chterev et al 2017). Sheen et al (1996) performed one of the earlier studies for cold flows in this respect, in which they investigated the recirculation zones in both confined and unconfined annular swirling jet flows by changing the Reynolds number (Re) and swirl numbers.…”

“…The mixing tube is designed to provide enough residence time to the reactants for good fuelair mixing. In the work of Reichel et al [14], the fuel-air mixing quality was studied for the current combustor setup and other configurations by means of laser-induced fluorescence. Within this study [14], the current setup showed very good spatial and temporal mixing quality, having a spatial unmixedness factor of U s = 2.37 • 10 −4 and a temporal unmixedness factor of U t = 4.2 • 10 −4 .…”

“…Flashback in the boundary layer of the mixing tube is avoided by diluting the mixture with air near the walls. This is achieved by drilling air dilution holes in the circumference of the mixing tube and choosing the residence time of the reactants below their autoignition delay times [14]. The measurements at elevated pressures were carried out in the high-pressure combustor rig (HBK-S) at the DLR Stuttgart.…”
