Abstract: Objective: Ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (US-FNA) biopsy has proven to be an accurate and efficient tool in thyroid nodule evaluation. We evaluated whether cell block adds to the diagnostic accuracy of US-FNA. Subjects and methods: Three hundred twenty-eight consecutive patients underwent US-FNA, cytology and cell block evaluation. Six slides were prepared for each patient and stained by Papanicolaou and Giemsa techniques. The residual hemorrhagic aspirate in the syringe and needle was fixed in 10% … Show more

“…The majority of our cases showed cellular cell block material with only a few with borderline adequate material. Our findings are essentially in agreement with diagnostic utility of cell block material in previous reported studies . We have also noticed that presence of adequate material on pap stained slides along with the cellular material on cell block enhance the diagnostic details and complement the characterization in to a definitive TBSRTC.…”

“…In order to decrease the nondiagnostic cytology result rate, it is important to have adequate material on the cytology sides. Value of the cell block material in thyroid FNA has also been evaluated . Cristo et al in a study of 358 patients compared cytology and combined cytology cell block nondiagnostic rates and found 17.1% vs 4.3%, respectively .…”

“…We excluded a further 233 studies and finally selected 38 studies, which included 145,066 thyroid nodules, for meta‐analysis (Fig. ) . Among the included studies, 4 were prospective and 34 were retrospective.…”

“…The material remaining after the slide preparation has been completed can be used for the application of immunocytochemistry on cell block material as well as for other ancillary techniques. The application of the cell block technique on thyroid FNA material has been described in the literature as having very good results, particularly in cases of unsatisfactory or intermediate cytology [15,16]. …”
