Increased Sales and Thefts of Candy as a Function of Sales Promotion Activities: Preliminary Findings

Abstract: We used an A-B-A design to evaluate the effects of two commonly used promotional activities-price reduction and increased exposure, in combination and separately-on sales and thefts of candy at a grocery store. The combination of activities and the increased exposure condition produced the greatest increases in sales. The combination of activities was also associated with the greatest increase in thefts.DESCRIPTORS: business problems, consumer behavior, theft, stimulus control, side effectsBehavior analysis ha… Show more

“…Moreover, ABA approaches have been employed successfully in numerous areas for a wide variety of behavioral deficits and excesses. Specifically, ABA approaches have been used in the areas of education (e.g., Gardner, Heward, & Grossi, 1994; Neef, Mace, Shea, & Shade, 1992; Witt, Noell, LaFleur, & Mortenson, 1997), business and industry (e.g., Carter, Kindstedt, & Melin, 1995; Fox, Hopkins, & Anger, 1987, Marholin, & Gray, 1976), psychological disorders (e.g., Kanter et al, 2006; Reisinger, 1972; Wilder, Masuda, O'Connor, & Baham, 2001), medicine (e.g., McComas, Lalli, & Benavides, 1999; Epstein, & Masek, 1978), gerontology (e.g., Gallagher, & Keenan, 2000; Hawley & Cherry, 2004; Shore, Lerman, Smith, Iwata, & DeLeon, 1995), drug addiction (e.g., Budney, Higgens, Delaney, Kent, & Bickel, 1991; Festinger, Lamb, Kirby, & Marlowe, 1996; Glenn & Dallery, 2007) community problems (e.g., Ludwig & Geller, 1991; Van Houten, Malenfant, Austin, & Lebbon 2005), and corrections (e.g., Milan, & McKee, 1976) to name a few. In addition, as the number of researchers and practitioners in ABA increases, the scope of the behavior analytic approach expands to new areas.…”

“…Another study investigated the effects of reduced prices and increased exposure of items in a grocery store. The data show that while these procedures increased sales, thefts increased as well (Carter, Kindstedt, & Melin, 1995). Other crime-related studies include two studies that evaluated the effects of various forms of signs to reduce illegal parking in spaces for persons with physical disabilities Cope, Alfred, & Morsel, 1991).…”

“…In addition, it is possible that there are effects from the signs beyond the theft and sales of the directly identified items. For example, Carter, Kindstedt, and Melin (1995) evaluated whether placing candy products on display and reducing their price increased or decreased theft and sales. Results indicated an increase in both sales and theft of targeted items, but also found a decrease in theft and sales for the control group.…”

“…134). While Carter et al (1995) included the effects of price reduction and increased exposure on theft of items not targeted, research on the signs and stickers intervention has yet to do so. Therefore, this study evaluated the impact of the theft-reduction signs and stickers (Carter & Holmberg) on targeted as well as nontargeted items located in either the same aisle or in other aisles of the store from where the signs and stickers were placed.…”
