Increased plasma levels of angiogenin and the risk of bladder carcinoma

Abstract: BACKGROUNDAngiogenesis is a well known prerequisite for tumor growth and metastasis. It is believed that angiogenin initiates cell migration and aids cell proliferation. Based on this, the authors hypothesized that individuals who had increased plasma levels of angiogenin were at an elevated risk for carcinoma of the urinary bladder.METHODSIn this ongoing case–control study, the authors used an enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay to compare plasma levels of angiogenin in 209 patients with bladder carcinoma and i… Show more

“…It is expressed in a wide variety of human cells [9]. ANG can be upregulated by a tumor, ischemia, or acute inflammatory reaction [8, 10, 11] and has been reported to be a potent stimulator of angiogenesis [1]. The relationship between angiogenesis and cerebral infarction has recently been drawing researchers’ attention.…”

“…In contrast, serum angiogenin levels were not found to be high in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck [7]. In patients treated for bladder carcinoma, increased plasma levels of angiogenin are shown to predict increased risk for recurrence [8].…”

“…To date, very few studies have been carried out on detection of angiogenin. At present, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) is the most widely used immunoassay method in the detection of angiogenin (Zhao et al, 2005;Kishimoto et al, 2005). The fluorescence detection of angiogenin using molecular labels is generally used in most of the cases .…”
