Abstract: BackgroundRadiofrequency ablation (RFA) is one of the curative therapies for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), however, accelerated progression of residual HCC after incomplete RFA has been reported more frequently. The underlying molecular mechanism of this phenomenon remains to be elucidated. In this study, we used an incomplete RFA orthotopic HCC nude mouse model to study the invasive and metastatic potential of residual cancer as well as the correlated mechanism.MethodsThe incomplete RFA orthotopic nude mous… Show more

“…Other EMT-related factors have also been reported to show similar characteristics in animal models [31, 32]. Additionally, IHC analysis of consecutive sections of lung metastases resected from the mouse model revealed that USP22 and AP4 were co-expressed in the metastases.…”

“…Thus, LTP after a RF ablation procedure that was a technical success has been postulated to be either due to microscopic residual disease or reseeding of circulating malignant cells in a patient who has metastatic colorectal cancer (21,22). A similar hypothesis has been posited for primary hepatocellular carcinoma lesions insufficiently treated with RF ablation (23,24).…”

“…Because relatively few recurrent tumors were investigated, the mechanism of oncogenesis is unknown. For example, studies of an orthotopic mouse model of HCC reveal that incomplete RFA accelerates HCC, and the cells acquire invasive and metastatic potential . The hypotheses that explain the molecular changes of HCC after RFA are reviewed below.…”
