Pseudocyst of pinna is a benign cystic swelling in the anterior part of the auricular cartilage due to intra-cartilaginous accumulation of fluid. This condition is prone to recurrences even after complete drainage of the intra-cartilaginous fluid by several available surgical procedures. AIMClinical study and comparison of different modalities of approaches for management of pseudocyst of pinna and adoption of a suitable method of treatment that has the least chance of recurrence. MATERIAL AND METHODS80 patients presenting with pseudocyst of the pinna between March 2008 and December 2015 to the Department of Ear, Nose and Throat of Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital, Bhubaneswar, Odisha, were clinically examined and after the diagnosis was made they were selected for different treatment modalities. The patients were followed up for three months in the postoperative period. RESULTSThe pseudocysts were most commonly seen in the age group of 31 to 40 years. Males were more frequently affected with the disease than females. No definite aetiological factor responsible for the disease could be determined in most of the cases, whereas trauma was the second most common cause. The scaphoid fossa with the triangular fossa was the most common site involved. The highest recurrence rate was observed in aseptic aspiration with pressure bandage in 55% of cases. Surgical de-roofing with compression buttoning and aseptic aspiration with compression buttoning were associated with the lowest recurrence rate seen in 5% of patients of each group. CONCLUSIONAmong different surgical procedures with varied rates of recurrences, aseptic aspiration followed by compression buttoning and surgical de-roofing followed by compression buttoning were found to be almost equally effective procedures with the former having definite advantage of being a cosmetically acceptable, less time consuming and cost-effective modality of management.

To review the presentation, types and aetiology of ear trauma and various factors affecting ear trauma in our patients over a 5 year period. All patients treated for ear trauma over a 5 year period were studied using their clinical records. Data extracted were analysed using SPSS version 11 software. The results were presented in simple descriptive and tabular forms. Forty-one patients, 18(43.90%) males and 23(56.10%) females were studied, ages 12-43 years, average 26.3 + 5 years. Blows/Slaps (65.85%) from assault was the commonest aetiology while bleeding from the ear (73.17%), hearing loss (70.73%) and tympanic membrane perforation (68.29%) were the most frequent presentations. Ear trauma is common and mostly affects the tympanic membrane. Sudden increase in canal pressure from blows/slaps was the major mechanism of injury. Management outcome was good except for few late presenters with compilations.

In addition to injuries to the pinna otologic traumatology comprises in particular injuries of the tympanic membrane and ossicular chain, temporal bone fractures together with accompanying impairment of the labyrinth and facial nerve as well as acoustic trauma and barotrauma. Depending on the mechanism of injury and typical symptoms, such as hemorrhagic otorrhoea, hearing loss, vertigo, tinnitus, facial nerve palsy, otoliquorrhea or pseudorhinoliquorrhea, further investigations should be planned. The present article provides an overview of the necessary further diagnostic measures as well as the therapeutic options currently available for all forms of injury mentioned here.

Abstract: Incision and drainage followed by through-and-through absorbable mattress sutures appears to be a superior method of treatment with rare reaccumulation of hematoma. This method of treatment was shown to be simple and well tolerated, and it had few complications.
